Vaiśampāyana said: Duryodhana, bull among the Bhārata lineage, lived in that sabhā and with Śākuni, he slowly inspected that entire sabhā.

One day, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son, the lord of the earth, arrived at a place in the middle of the sabhā that was paved with crystal.
एक दिन, धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र, पृथ्वी के स्वामी, सभा के मध्य में एक स्थान पर पहुंचे जो स्फटिक से बना था।
The king thought it to be water and, in alarm, raised up his clothes. His mind deluded, he wandered around the sabhā, shame-faced and miserable.
राजा ने सोचा कि यह पानी है और घबराकर उसने अपने कपड़े ऊपर उठाये। उसका मन भ्रमित हो गया, वह लज्जित और दुखी होकर सभा के चारों ओर घूमता रहा।
After some time, he mistook a lake with crystal water, adorned with crystal lotuses, for land and fell into the water with his clothes on.
कुछ समय बाद, उसने स्फटिक कमलों से सुशोभित स्फटिक जल वाली झील को भूमि समझ लिया और अपने वस्त्रों सहित पानी में गिर गया।
On seeing him fall into the water, the servants laughed out in delight and on the instructions of the king, gave him fresh clothes.
उसे पानी में गिरता देख नौकर खुशी से हंस पड़े और राजा के आदेश पर उसे नये कपड़े दिये।
On seeing him in that fashion, the immensely strong Bhīmasena, and Arjuna and the twins, all burst out in laughter.
उन्हें उस रूप में देखकर अत्यंत बलशाली भीमसेन, अर्जुन तथा जुड़वाँ बच्चे सभी ज़ोर से हँस पड़े।

नामर्षयत्ततस्तेषामवहासममर्षणः आकारं रक्षमाणस्तु न स तान्समुदैक्षत
Since he was incapable of bearing insults, he could not tolerate this. To save his face, he did not even look at them.
चूँकि वह अपमान सहन करने में असमर्थ था, इसलिए वह यह सहन नहीं कर सका। अपनी इज्जत बचाने के लिए उस ने उन की ओर देखा भी नहीं.
He again drew up his clothes to ascend firm land and all the people again laughed out aloud.
उसने दृढ़ भूमि पर चढ़ने के लिए फिर से अपने कपड़े पहने और सभी लोग फिर जोर से हंस पड़े।
He mistook a closed door to be open and hurt his forehead against it. On another occasion, taking an open one to be closed, he stepped away from the doorway.
उसने बंद दरवाजे को खुला समझ लिया और उसके माथे पर चोट लग गई। एक अन्य अवसर पर, खुले दरवाज़े को बंद समझकर वह दरवाज़े से दूर चला गया।
O lord of the earth! He thus committed various errors there. Kin Duryodhana then took Pandavya's leave.
हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! इस प्रकार उसने वहां विभिन्न त्रुटियां कीं। तब दुर्योधन ने पांडवों से विदा ली।
He set out for Gajasahrya. On having witnessed the extraordinary opulence at the great rājasūya sacrifice, his mind was unhappy.
वह गजाश्रय के लिए निकल पड़े। महान राजसूय यज्ञ में असाधारण ऐश्वर्य देखकर उनका मन दुखी हो गया।
As he travelled, he was inflamed at the prosperity of the Pāṇḍava-s and evil thoughts were seeded in King Duryodhana's mind.
जब वह यात्रा कर रहा था, तो वह पांडवों की समृद्धि से बहुत क्रोधित हुआ और राजा दुर्योधन के मन में बुरे विचारों का बीजारोपण हुआ।
O extender of the Kuru lineage! On seeing the happiness of the Pārtha-s, the submission of the kings, the love the worlds had for them, from children onwards,
हे कुरु वंश के विस्तारक! पार्थों की ख़ुशी, राजाओं की अधीनता, बच्चों से लेकर उनके प्रति संसार के प्रेम को देखकर,
and the supreme splendour of the great-souled Pāṇḍava-s, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son Duryodhana turned pale.
और महाबली पाण्डवों का परम वैभव, धृतराष्ट्र का पुत्र दुर्योधन पीला पड़ गया।

As he travelled, he thought intently about the sabhā and the unrivalled prosperity of the intelligent Dharmarāja.

Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son Duryodhana was so inattentive, that he did not respond when Subala's son repeatedly spoke to him.
धृतराष्ट्र का पुत्र दुर्योधन इतना असावधान था कि जब सुबाला के पुत्र ने उससे बार-बार बात की तो उसने कोई उत्तर नहीं दिया।
On seeing him so distracted, Śākuni responded, "O Duryodhana! Why are you travelling with all these sighs?"
उसे इस प्रकार विचलित देखकर शकुनि ने उत्तर दिया, "हे दुर्योधन! तुम इतनी आहें भरते हुए क्यों यात्रा कर रहे हो?"
Duryodhana replied: "I saw the entire earth brought under Yudhiṣṭhira's suzerainty, conquered with the power and weapons of the great-souled one with white horses.
दुर्योधन ने उत्तर दिया: "मैंने सारी पृथ्वी को युधिष्ठिर के आधिपत्य में आते देखा, जिसे सफेद घोड़ों वाले महान आत्मा की शक्ति और हथियारों से जीत लिया गया था।
O maternal uncle! I witnessed the sacrifice of Pārtha, like that of the immensely radiant Śākra among the gods.
हे मामा! मैंने देवताओं में अत्यंत तेजस्वी शक्र के समान पार्थ का बलिदान देखा।
I am full of envy and am burning day and night. I am drying up like a shallow pond in the hot season.
मैं ईर्ष्या से भरा हुआ हूँ और दिन-रात जलता रहता हूँ। मैं गर्मी के मौसम में उथले तालाब की तरह सूख रहा हूँ।

साक्षी - जब शिशुपाल को सात्वत-वंश के अग्रणी लोगों ने मार डाला, तो एक भी व्यक्ति ऐसा नहीं था जो उसके पक्ष में खड़ा हो।

पांडवों की ज्वाला से राजा जल गए और अपराध क्षमा कर दिया। उस अपराध को कौन क्षमा कर सकता है?
Vāsudeva's great deed was improper and succeeded only because of the power of the great-souled Pāṇḍava-s.
वासुदेव का महान कार्य अनुचित था और केवल महान आत्मा वाले पांडवों की शक्ति के कारण सफल हुआ।

Various kings brought many jewels to King Kaunteya and worshipped him, like vaiśya-s who pay taxes.
विभिन्न राजा राजा कौन्तेय के लिए अनेक रत्न लाते थे और उनकी पूजा करते थे, जैसे कर चुकाने वाले वैश्य होते थे।
On seeing the blazing prosperity of the Pāṇḍava-s, I am afflicted with jealousy and am burning, though I am not made that way.
पांडवों की चमकती समृद्धि को देखकर, मैं ईर्ष्या से पीड़ित हूं और जल रहा हूं, हालांकि मैं उस तरह नहीं बना हूं।

मैं अपने आप को आग में झोंक दूँगा, या ज़हर खा लूँगा, या पानी में डूबो दूँगा। मैं जीवित रहना बर्दाश्त नहीं कर सकता.

यदि आज मैं उन समृद्धि को सहन करती जो उन पर आई है, तो मैं एक महिला नहीं होती, या वह जो महिला नहीं होती, या पुरुष नहीं होती, या वह जो पुरुष नहीं होती।

पृथ्वी पर उनके आधिपत्य को, उनके धन को और उनके बलिदान को देखकर, मेरे जैसा व्यक्ति कैसे ज्वरग्रस्त नहीं हो सकता?
Alone, I am not capable of acquiring such royal prosperity, nor do I see any help. Therefore, I am thinking of death.
अकेले मैं ऐसी राजसी समृद्धि प्राप्त करने में समर्थ नहीं हूं और न ही मुझे कोई सहायता नजर आती है. इसलिए मैं मौत के बारे में सोच रहा हूं.'

दैवमेव परं मन्ये पौरुषं तु निरर्थकम् दृष्ट्वा कुन्तीसुते शुभ्रां श्रियं तामाहृतां तथा
On seeing the pure prosperity of Kuntī's son, I consider destiny to be supreme and endeavour to be meaningless.
कुन्ती-पुत्र की पवित्र समृद्धि देखकर मैं भाग्य को सर्वोपरि मानता हूँ और प्रयत्न को निरर्थक मानता हूँ।
O Saubala! In the past, I have made attempts to kill him. But he overcame all of them and prospered like a lotus in the water.
हे सौबाला! पहले भी मैंने उसे मारने की कोशिशें की हैं. लेकिन उन्होंने उन सभी पर विजय प्राप्त की और पानी में कमल की तरह समृद्ध हुए।
Therefore, I consider destiny to be supreme and endeavour to be meaningless. The Dhṛtarāṣṭra-s are declining and the Pārtha-s are always prospering.
इसलिए मैं भाग्य को सर्वोपरि मानता हूं और प्रयास को निरर्थक मानता हूं। धृतराष्ट्र-वंश का पतन हो रहा है और पार्थ-वंश हमेशा समृद्ध हो रहा है।

सोऽहं श्रियं च तां दृष्ट्वा सभां तां च तथाविधाम् रक्षिभिश्चावहासं तं परितप्ये यथाग्निना
When I see their prosperity and that beautiful sabhā and the derisive laughter of the guards, I burn as if with fire.
जब मैं उनकी समृद्धि, वह सुन्दर सभा और पहरेदारों की उपहास भरी हँसी देखता हूँ, तो मानो आग से जल उठता हूँ।

स मामभ्यनुजानीहि मातुलाद्य सुदुःखितम् अमर्षं च समाविष्टं धृतराष्ट्रे निवेदय
O maternal uncle! Please allow me now to suffer in misery and tell Dhṛtarāṣṭra about the envy that has pervaded me."
हे मामा! कृपया अब मुझे दुख सहने की अनुमति दें और धृतराष्ट्र को उस ईर्ष्या के बारे में बताएं जो मुझमें व्याप्त है।"
